UDPD traffic stop results in felony charges for Collingdale man
When Upper Darby police noticed a car with a registration that returned “no record found,” it concerned them. The tinted windows and smell of marijuana didn’t help either. The stop eventually led to felony charges against one Collingdale man.
According to police, Dymeir Jameil Bennett, 22, of the 100 block of Wayne Avenue in Collingdale, was operating a blue Nissan with New Jersey plates traveling westbound on Baltimore Avenue in Upper Darby Township on Nov. 6 around 2:16 a.m. Police said after running the car’s registration, they found no record of its existence, causing them to conduct a traffic stop.
According to an affidavit of probable cause, police said they stopped the vehicle in the area of the first block of Wildwood Avenue. Police said that Bennett was identified as the driver and said that he’d just purchased the car. Upon conducting the traffic stop, police said they recognized “the odor of fresh marijuana” coming from the Nissan.
Police said Bennett did not possess a medical marijuana card nor a permit to carry a firearm. He did tell police he had marijuana in the car, said the affidavit. According to police, Delaware County Emergency Radio advised the officers at the scene that Bennett had a warrant out for his arrest. During a patdown, police said they found a plastic vial containing suspected marijuana in Bennett’s right jacket pocket.
The vehicle’s registration was fraudulent, according to police. A warrant for Bennett was later found to not be valid, police said. However, Bennett was taken into custody for possession of marijuana. His vehicle was impounded by Marshall Road Towing, due to Bennett’s arrest, police said.
An inventory was conducted of the vehicle, according to police, at which time police found a “void underneath the center console” which contained two Glock 9mm handguns. The guns were a Glock 26 and Glock 19x, according to the affidavit.
Bennett is facing felony charges of receiving stolen property and firearms not to be carried without a license, as well as misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana, use or possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession/sale/use of display documents, in addition to a summary offense of improper sunscreening (for the tinted windows).
Bennett was held in county jail on Nov. 6 unable to post bail. However, on Nov. 7, he was released after posting $7,500 cash bail (10 percent of $75,000) himself. Bennett is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Jan. 9 at 9 a.m. before Magisterial District Judge Christopher R. Mattox.
All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using public court records.
