East Lansdowne police install 41 AI-powered cameras
As artificial intelligence becomes more ubiquitous in our everyday lives, one small borough in Delaware County is tapping AI to help its police department fight crime.
The East Lansdowne Police Department recently installed 41 AI-powered cameras to monitor roadways and sidewalks in real time, according to news reports.
James Cadden, East Lansdowne’s police chief, said the new cameras allow officers to quickly review footage from a given area instead of simply using surveillance video for investigatory purposes.
“The patrol officer in the car, with just a single swipe of their finger, can pull up an intersection as soon as they receive a call for help,” said Cadden.
Potentially in response to privacy concerns, Cadden also told news outlets that the cameras do not have facial recognition, they do not record inside private residences or businesses, they cannot read license-plate numbers, and they do not cross-reference databases.
