Borough, police remind residents to stay off the ice
The frigid temperatures and icy winds of this winter’s season has all of Greater Philadelphia enjoying some weather we are not typically accustomed to having. And while you may be cussing your way to another frost-covered windshield, many are excited to be able to snowboard, ski, ice skate, and sled.
Perhaps it is the lack of experience that adds to the concern, but such winter activities must also come with safety in mind. In Lansdowne Borough, community officials and local police are warning residents just such reminders.
Concerns of late involve the borough’s icy creeks, said Lansdowne Police Department in a recent social media post.
“We’re echoing some sage advice from the Borough this [Tuesday] morning and urging folks to stay off the ice of the Darby Creek,” said the post from police. “It’s simply not safe for skaters.”
Because of the water’s rapid currents, it is no place for skating, even if temperatures are below freezing point.
“The mighty Darby moves far too fast and has too many deep spots to support anyone on skates or on foot,” said police on Facebook. “What might seem to be a patch that could hold your weight could be very close to a spot that isn’t thick enough.”
Such uncertainty can bring great danger.
“Once you go under, you’re often under,” said the police. “Enjoy the creek from the banks! Please, stay off the ice!”
The Borough also posted to social media reminding residents to stay clear of the Creek.
“Skating on Darby Creek is NOT safe right now,” said the Borough’s post. “There are many areas that remain unfrozen, and venturing out onto the ice could lead to dangerous situations.”
